DAVE CUMBER VETS WELCOME NEXT GENERATION OF VETS TO WEYMOUTH SURGERY

This summer, Dave Cumber Vets have welcomed several students into the Weymouth surgery to enable them to get an insight into various job roles in the Veterinary practice.   The students had the chance to observe vet practice, handle pets under supervision and consultations whilst offering help with minor operations and after care of the pets following operations.

Malcolm Cumber, Practice Manager said “We like to support and encourage more young people to think of veterinary care as a career.   We think it is really important to get the views of younger people. A lot of the work experience in this industry only gives students a slice and rarely lets them do anything practical. We show them everything and we like to make it as hands on as possible.”  Mr Cumber went on to say “We work with a wide variety of local schools and local people who are studying away from home.  We have welcomed students from Budmouth Academy, Dorset Studio school, Kingston Maurward College, Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester and University students from Bristol, Nottingham and plus students from overseas.”

Maddy Bell from Weymouth has just completed her first year at Bristol University where she is studying Veterinary science.

Maddy said “I am a first year student studying veterinary science at Bristol University and I have been doing my EMS (work experience) at Dave Cumber Vets.   Over the two weeks that I was at the surgery in Weymouth I have had the opportunity to experience routine procedures such as spays and castrations as well as more advanced orthopaedic surgery, interesting scans and some fascinating consultations.  I have been lucky enough to learn a great deal about anatomy, endocrinology, animal behaviour and client communication from the wonderful vets and nurses.  It is a course requirement to gain experience with small animals and this placement has been very valuable to my studies.

I am very grateful to all the staff at Dave Cumber Vets, from the vets, to the nurses to the reception staff for being welcoming, and making me feel very comfortable in such a unique environment.  Everyone has ensured my time has been not only really interesting but enjoyable as well.  I am very thankful for having been given the opportunity to do my placement at such a brilliant practice filled with such brilliant people.”

There are a number of employees at Dave Cumber Vets who trained and gained work experience at the practice, one of the employees is Natasha Scotson who is a Veterinary Surgeon at the Weymouth surgery, Natasha qualified from Bristol University and joined Dave Cumber Vets in 2015 and is passionate about promoting keyhole surgery procedures.
